Project Title: Social Interdependence and Air Travel

Protocol and Consent Title:
You are being asked to be a volunteer in a research study.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the interrelationships between individuals’ air travel behavior. Participants in this study must be at least 18 years old on or before the date that this survey is completed.
The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. During this survey you will be asked for general demographic information and a history of the long-distance trips you have taken during the past year. Upon completing these fields, you will be given the opportunity to log in to your Facebook account, and a software program will collect data that you have made publicly viewable on your Facebook profile, including:
(1) the networks that you belong to (current city, hometown, and schools attended),
(2) age/birthdate, and
(3) the number of friends on your friend list.

This program will also collect general information about the friends on your friends list, including:
(1) the cities where your friends are located,
(2) the cities listed by your friends as their hometown,
(3) the quantity of friends you have in those cities,
(4) how long you have had friends located in those cities, and
(5) the friends you have in common with other study participants.
We can only collect this data if your friends have made this information available to their friends or friend-groups.

The data collected in this research study is completely anonymous: no names or contact information (e.g., email, phone numbers) are collected in answering the survey questions, or in the information that the Facebook app collects from your Facebook profile or friends list. Facebook ID codes are collected, but are converted into anonymous identification codes using an industry-standard cryptographic hash function prior to being recorded in the survey database. This database is located on secured servers within the College of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. You should be aware that the experiment is not being run from a ‘secure’ “https” server of the kind typically used to handle credit card transactions, so there is a small possibility that the responses could be viewed by unauthorized third parties (such as computer hackers) during transmission. In general, the web page software will log as header lines the IP address of the machine you use to access this page, e.g., 102.403.506.807, but otherwise no other information will be stored, other than that information identified above.

The risks involved are no greater than those involved in daily activities. You will not directly benefit from or be compensated for joining this study. Study records will be kept confidential to the extent allowed by law. To make sure that this research is being carried out in the proper way, the Georgia Institute of Technology IRB may review study records. The Office of Human Research Protections may also look at study records.
Your participation in this study is voluntary. You do not have to be in this study if you don’t want to be. You have the right to change your mind and leave the study at any time without giving any reason and without penalty. You will be given a copy of this consent form to keep. You do not waive any of your legal rights by agreeing to be in the study. If you have any questions about the study, you may contact Kari Watkins at telephone 206-250-4415, or Gregory Macfarlane or Thomas Wall at telephone 404-894-2236. If you have any questions about your rights as a research subject, you may contact Ms. Melanie Clark, Georgia Institute of Technology, at telephone 404-894-6942.

By checking the boxes below and clicking the ‘Accept’ button, you indicate your consent to participate in this research study. Please feel free to print this page for later reference. Thank you for your participation.
